Effiscienz is proud to announce the vinyl release of "Universal Language", the first album of AKD & Deepstar. Released last year, but only on CD and digital, the emcee AKD (UK) and beatmaker Deepstar (Australia) earned a resounding success among "real Hip-Hop" fans worldwide. Accompanied by renowned artists such as Masta Ace, AG (DITC), Rapsody, Tragedy Khadafi and Dj Rob Swift, the duo was able to prove that they have their own universe and could produce music way beyond the notoriety of their guest appearances. Impressed by the quality of the project, Effiscienz decided to highlight the ill combo by realeasing a collector's edition double vinyl "splatter".
Los Angeles band The Neighbourhood - Jesse Rutherford (vocals), Jeremy Freedman (guitar), Zach Abels (guitar) Mikey Margott (bass) and Brandon Fried (drums) - will release its eagerly anticipated sophomore effort Wiped Out! via Columbia Records. The album, which Billboard called a "darkly moody album [that] aptly culls together indie rock and R&B," includes first single "R.I.P. 2 My Youth," and arrives as the worthy follow-up to their breakout debut album I Love You, and the band's influential, double-platinum hit single "Sweater Weather," which ruled radio and video platforms for months with one of the longest and most successful runs of 2013 along with follow-up single "Afraid," which reached the top 5 at Alternative Radio.
Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis called the band's sprawling 2006 quadruple LP album Stadium Arcadium, "the best thing that we’ve ever done...There’s this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records.” Produced by the great Rick Rubin and serving as the group's last to date with longtime guitarist John Frusciante, Stadium Arcadium exudes all the passion, energy and funked-up rock that has made the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame act one of the most popular and enduring in music history. Stadium Arcadium is home to five hit singles including "Dani California," "Tell Me Baby," "Snow (Hey Oh)," "Desecration Smile" and "Hump de Bump," and yielded seven Grammy-nominations and five wins including Best Rock Album in 2007.

David Bowie's The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars erased borders, eliminated stereotypes, broke open cultural possibilities, and spawned a legacy like no other. More than four decades after its release, the record remains one of the most electrifying and brilliant works ever released. Again available on 180g vinyl LP, it is here presented in freshly remastered sound that does justice to Bowie, Mick Ronson, and company's creative genius. Ziggy Stardust is an album written by an aspirant rock star in the guise of a hugely successful one. This nifty deceit has led to it being dubbed the first post-modern pop record. Its songs obtusely referenced aspects of rock history, whilst at the same time tell a story of a future world of extraterrestrial intervention and space-age androgyny. Ziggy Stardust works so well because it's a concept album with the ‘concept' taken out. So much of pop music would have been unthinkable, unimaginable, without this record. In pop, you're always best remembered for your initial breakthrough. Bowie's career trajectory through soul, electronica and avant-garde pop is perhaps, in part, an attempt to free himself from this stereotyping circa 1972.

One of the most popular instrumental series of all time continues to expand with HISS Foundations. This project is truly one of those records produced solely for the diehard fans of Damu’s How it Should Sound (HISS) Volumes 1 & 2, but might also be a great introduction for newcomers. This 2XLP collection contains more than beats, but seeds of ambition long before the (original) harvest. Straight from the archives, literally salvaged from the original recordings and unedited, never before have these demos been publicly available. One may think they’re well familiar with the sounds, but this is an intimate look into a rather private artist’s sketchbook. In no way should this replace HISS 1 & 2, but instead consider this as a collector’s item.
While G-funk dominated hip-hop airwaves through the 1990s, the pulse of underground rap was maintained at the Good Life Café, an open-mic workshop at the corner of Crenshaw & Exposition in Los Angeles. After Freestyle Fellowship became the first Good Life group to invade the national consciousness in 1991, a young duo called THE NONCE were their heirs apparent, seemingly primed for a breakthrough. Composed of Leimert Park natives Lance ‘Nouka Basetype / Sach’ Caldwell and Yusef ‘Afloat’Muhammad, The Nonce had already been rapping and recording together for years prior to arriving at Good Life. The Nonce signed to Wild West Records / American and completed a record called ‘World Ultimate’ in 1995. An early single called “Mix Tapes” emerged from the ‘World Ultimate’ sessions. With its dense percussion, rolling bass, spare horn samples and deft turntable scratches, it’s emblematic of the sound that would pervade the classic album. The song charts Sach and Yusef’s growth from mixtape peddlers to artists. It also became The Nonce’s stepping stone to a major label contract and a bonafide west coast classic. After ‘World Ultimate,’ Sach and Yusef intended to push their musical boundaries even further. Unfortunately for Yusef Afloat, the journey ended at age 28. In 2000 his body was found beside the 110-Freeway. In the years since Sach has maintained a prolific solo career, selfreleasing nearly a dozen projects ranging from LPs to collaborations and instrumental tapes. Fast forward to 2016 and the forthcoming release of ‘ESSENTIAL [HNR57] a remastered twelve-track “Best of” SACH compilation album, serving as a re-introduction of Sach to a new generation of hip-hop lovers, producers, beat makers & emcees. This extraordinary musical document comes complete with cover artwork courtesy of Augustine Kofie, the legendary photography of Eric Coleman, plus illustrative and informative liner notes by luminary Carlos Nino, and is available on limited-edition 12” tangerine colored vinyl (plus Cassette tape (includes two non-LP bonus tracks “Heavenly Spit” & “Robot on Ya”).

After three and a half years, award-winning artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis return on February 26th with This Unruly Mess I’ve Made. The thirteen track LP includes platinum selling single “Downtown” (featuring Kool Moe Dee, Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, and Eric Nally), as well as previously unavailable “Growing Up” (featuring Ed Sheeran). The long awaited follow-up to the acclaimed debut LP The Heist, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made was largely recorded over the course of a year in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. “What I couldn’t find in a hotel room, on the road or in Seattle, I found in the middle of nowhere” says Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty. The eclectic, raw, and emotional album is an honest look into the soul of two artists who “needed time to be human again.” It also marks the official release of the stirring “Kevin”, previously performed on the American Music Awards, and featuring Grammy nominated soul crooner Leon Bridges.

Official Reissue of the 1973 album recorded live at The Magic Carpet, Dayton, Ohio. In 1973, a young Ohio pianist named Roy Meriwether prepared a trio that laid down some of the most compelling soulful Jazz ever recorded live to tape. Recorded live at “The Magic Carpet” in the heart of downtown Dayton, Ohio, Nubian Lady united the talented trio of Bill Conway (double bass), Billy Jackson (drums) and Roy Meriwether (piano). Released on tiny indie label Singer Productions, Nubian Lady never got the proper push it deserved, and remained a extremely rare (and expensive) treasure for decades. After being re-discovered by DJs and sample hunters, the album has taken on almost mythical status among collectors of jazz, soul, and funk. Now, more than 40 years after it’s original release, Nubian Lady is finally back in print on limited-edition vinyl, complete with never-before-seen photos, new liner notes, and a bonus LP containing another rare Meriwether recording, 1975’s Roy Meriwether Live. Reflecting on the triad’s time together, Billy Jackson recalls knowing it was special. “We all got along real well, it was an adventure working with Roy, then we started to click. The more we played together, the better we played, we began to think alike, and had a very good group together”. These recordings are in a groove, it’s “live”, it’s that experience that you need to participate in. Meriwether summed it up best: “It doesn’t stop, it goes all the way through to the end, it doesn’t break up. Even the drum solo, and the bass solo, being as out as it is, it’s still in the realm of the rhythm!"
Now nominated for four Golden Globes including Best Score, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's survival epic is getting the vinyl treatment. Mastered for vinyl and limited to 3,000 units, this landmark release is handsomely packaged in a matte tip-on gatefold jacket with each of the two 180 gram pearlescent vinyl (one translucent blue, one cloud white) coming in their own euro sleeve. A download card for a digital version of the album is also included. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy and shot in the frozen Canadian wilderness with only natural lighting, The Revenant is a story of loss, revenge and resilience in the face of impossible odds against the furies of man and nature itself. A film of this magnitude deserves a composer who understands creative artistry and unbridled passion. Japanese master and Oscar winner Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor) fits the bill perfectly. Along with fellow Yellow Magic Orchestra member and frequent collaborator Alva Noto, Sakamoto has created a gripping soundtrack that is sure to be a treat for the winter crowds. Bryce Dessner (writer for Kronos Quartet and the LA Phil) also supplies additional music.
Includes the Original Album Plus Previously Unreleased Mono Reference Versions, Vocal Overdubs & Alternate Takes! On December 9th, 1964, John Coltrane and his classic quartet (Elvin Jones, Jimmy Garrison and McCoy Tyner) went into the legendary Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey and recorded A Love Supreme - the four-part suite that has influenced musicians and reached generations of fans far beyond the jazz world. Far less known is the fact that Coltrane, his classic quartet and two additional musicians - the legendary saxophonist Archie Shepp and second bassist, Dr. Art Davis - returned to the studio the next day to cut the opening part of the suite again.Until now, the complete picture of what happened on those two days, including all takes, overdubs, and even studio chatter, has been unavailable. That will change when Verve Music Group proudly releases A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of this seminal recording. It will include this alternate version, taken from reels from the personal collection of John Coltrane and originally recorded in incredible sonic detail by Rudy Van Gelder, along with revised notes and detailed information on these amazing lost sessions. With the availability of long-lost session reels, A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters brings together all existing recordings and written outlines for the first time to paint the most comprehensive and accurate picture of the A Love Supreme story. It reveals how Coltrane's masterpiece came together, from its initial conception as a nine-piece performance - it turns out the original plan was for a nine-piece band, including three Latin percussionists - to how it changed and developed in the studio. While the 2002 edition of A Love Supreme did include some of the music recorded at the second session, The Complete Masters is the first to feature all six takes of "Acknowledgement," the opening section of the suite, in their entirety, providing a deeper understanding and appreciation of how Coltrane would allow music to mature in the studio. A Love Supreme was Coltrane's most pre-conceived, meticulously planned musical recording: "This is the first time I have everything ready," he famously told his wife Alice after composing the suite in their Long Island home. It was also his most successful, a high-water mark in Coltrane's career and popularity in 1965-generating two Grammy Award-nominations, and earning him top position in various polls that year. That A Love Supreme remains a permanent fixture in lists of Greatest and Most Important musical recordings of the modern era - Rolling Stone magazine places it at No. 47 in its "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - speaks to the enduring significance of Coltrane's music and his message of spirituality. As Kahn writes in the essay to A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters: "Fifty years after its release, voices that speak of divine light and supreme love have trouble being heard. Lines that divide people run deep. At odds with itself, the world lacks the spirit to ascend and is needful once again of a spiritual recharger like A Love Supreme. The sound and message of John Coltrane remain more relevant than ever."

Santigold is Santi White: an artist whose perseverance relies on invention, a champion who survives off her own skill and faith. She is a major muse watched by the inspired world, an in categorical performer who collapses time and genre with one hand guided by tradition, while the other hand carves out a shining future. Santigold is neither calm nor mayhem, but from her lungs burst every color in between.
Recorded in Marfa, Texas, YACHT's See Mystery Lights is an intimate party record that was captured in widescreen Technicolor. Singles include Summer Song and the sublimely catchy Psychic City, mixing electro and post punk rhythms seamlessly. Jona Bechtolt - founding member of YACHT, former member of the Blow - is a huge talent, something that may not have been readily apparent on any of his three previous LPs. Those albums, created largely as solo endeavors, will not have prepared listeners for See Mystery Lights. Now an official partnership between Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, who performed on several songs on 2007's I Believe In You, Your Magic Is Real, YACHT finally feel like a full-fledged band with direction and vision, particularly given the added weight (or rather, levity) of Evans' influence. The songs on See Mystery Lights - from the bouncy, burbling you-can't-take-it-with-you screed The Afterlife (which plays like a less spastic companion piece to the Mae Shi's Run to Your Grave) to the roller rink-ready vocoder vocals of I'm In Love With a Ripper - represent YACHT at their most poppy. It's a collection of stone jams that finds the band finally as hellbent on experimenting and expanding the boundaries of its sonic scope as it is on having fun. Built on electronic foundations - laser effects, skittering computerized beats, and spacey synth lines (or guitar riffs that have been tuned or distorted to sound like synths) - these new songs are giddy with creative freedom while remaining tethered in service of their melodies. The vocal melodies are bright and buoyant, but delivered (by either band member, or in unison) in a chanted, oftentimes detached monotone that plays up the repetitive lyrics' mantra-like feel and adds a welcome undercurrent of slacker cool to their otherwise sugary optimism. See Mystery Lights also marks the first time that YACHT are recording for DFA. Normally a label-change wouldn't be notable, as it is usually less an indicator of artistic choices than it is of financial or business ones, but moving to a label with such a distinctive aesthetic may be enough for many to reconsider their work. YACHT themselves created the track Summer Song as an homage to LCD Soundsystem, and LCD/DFA leader James Murphy liked it enough to release it on his label. It's no wonder that Murphy was smitten; the track, which also appears on the full-length, echoes the deadpan vocal delivery and burbling 80s krautrock synths of his own band, as well as cowbell-and-handclap percussion ripped from the Rapture's House of Jealous Lovers, one of DFA's biggest singles. Even other tracks on the collection - ones that weren't written specifically in homage to Murphy - can't help but sound influenced by him. Case in point: We Have All We've Ever Wanted, with its minimalist dance beat, heavy bass, and Bechtolt's dry, talky delivery, recalls Losing My Edge, albeit with a lighthearted, anthemic chorus. Still, while YACHT clearly share influences with Murphy's gang (Eno, Ferry, Neu!, ESG, etc.), their positive, futuristic jams actually sound most closely related to Tom Tom Club. Perhaps that's because, like Tom Tom Club's first self-titled album, which was recorded in Barbados, See Mystery Lights was recorded in a sunny, faraway locale - in this case, far from the band's native rainy Portland, Oregon, in Marfa, Texas. The vibe of the album is relaxed and sun-soaked - especially Psychic City (Voodoo City), which features an elastic groove built on a dubby, reggae-ish keyboard melody inspired by the bassline of Althea and Donna's Uptown Top Ranking. Regardless of influence or intent, however, See Mystery Lights is a triumph. It's a feel-good album for an era that could use a little happiness, a sweaty collection of heady, hedonistic tunes just in time for the hottest days of the year. And the best part is that one spin of this wily, sunny disc will be able to transport you back to summer vacation any day of the year.
Goo is a portrait of Sonic Youth at their most self-indulgently noisy and contentious, covering topics ranging from Karen Carpenter (‘Tunic’) to UFOs (‘Disappearer’) to dating Jesus' mom (‘Mary-Christ’). Even Public Enemy's Chuck D joins the fracas on the single ‘Kool Thing’.

Joseph Abajian (DJ Jab) founded Fat Beats in 1994 with nothing more than a shoestring budget and an earnest obsession with the music, the culture, and the brotherhood of New York’s burgeoning rap scene. What began as a simple vinyl shop in Manhattan’s Lower East Side quickly became an integral hub for artists, both aspiring and established, to convene and collaborate on new projects. Joseph’s timing couldn’t have been more impeccable. When the 90’s cultural zeitgeist – and, in turn, the music industry establishment – chose hip-hop as its new arbiter of cool.
International tourists and touring artists alike flocked to Fat Beats for rare vinyl, kindred spirits, and exclusive in-store performances from Jay Z, Eminem, Gang Starr, Outkast, Slum Village, Mos Def, and more. One thing was clear: the Fat Beats phenomenon could no longer be contained in a single basement shop.
In the late nineties, Abajian proceeded to open new stores in Amsterdam, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. He further expanded the company’s profile to include global distribution and record label branches. Distribution has since proven to be the company’s strongest and most enduring enterprise. Today Fat Beats Distribution stands poised as one of the country’s pre-eminent distributors of vinyl & specialty item records: a proud survivor in an industry now famous for its mortality rate. Despite market fluctuations, technology innovations, and stylistic revolutions, Fat Beats has remained steadfast in its commitment to the timeless vinyl format and to the loyal community who keeps it spinning.
