It took three years for The Pharcyde to follow up on their debut release, "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde." Not that they didn't keep busy in that period with supporting slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful spot on Lollapalooza's 1994 tour. Of course J-Swift had parted ways with the group just before the conclusion of the Bizarre Ride sessions. Rather than try to out an out replace Swift, production on Labcabincalifornia was handled by the Pharcyde's own Bootie Brown, Fatlip and Slimkid3 along with contributions from Diamond D, M-Walk and very notably the work of a recent arrival in LA, Jay Dee aka J Dilla. The resulting project, "Labcabincalifornia", maybe calmer than the group's debut but it's no less warped with stand out cuts like the She Said, Drop, and Runnin'. Traffic Entertainment and The Bicycle Music Company are now proud to bring you the instrumentals of the entire project on this special double vinyl edition.

When electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008, she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream.. Her name may have been pluralized but Lights Poxleitner was a one-woman show who played and programmed her own instruments and sang her own lyrics. This admirable self-reliance is rare in pop—in fact, Lights, signed a publishing deal at 16 and began writing songs for other artists—but after her 2008 selftitled debut EP (precocious enough to earn her a best new artist Juno) and gold-selling full-length follow-up THE LISTENING, Lights was ready to open herself up to collaborations on her unexpectedly experimental album SIBERIA. And by choosing such leftfield collaborators as live electronic outfit Holy Fuck and rising rapper Shad, she also opened up her sound.
Fresh off the release of his celebrated retrospective collection “Essential” [HNR57], legendary Hip-Hop producer & emcee, SACH offers up his eleventh solo album “fiDELITY” [HNR56] via HIT+RUN. This fresh 9-song EP was recorded in Fall 2015 utilizing a new 24-track supplied by Sach’s long-time contemporary Giovanni Marks (aka Subtitle). The results are an eclectic progression of his laidback jazzy production style & delivery first introduced back in his formative years with The Nonce. Live drums, bass & saxophone were woven into ‘fiDELITY”, alongside scratching & percussion by long-time accomplice DJ E-Spinfiniti. Album highlights include special guests Mean Green (on the smoker’s anthem ‘Wise Buds Being Broken’) and Koko on the exuberant “Cha Cha (In The Lounge With Sach)”. Catch Sach performing at a very special month-long residency every Monday night in March at The Virgil in Los Angeles to celebrate this auspicious release.
Still on the heels of his critically-acclaimed LP “Tap Water,” XL Middleton returns, however briefly, with a cassette of cuts that were intended for that album but not included in the final run. This is “Tap Water Runoff.” It includes six tracks, some instrumental, some vocal, all of which are laden with XL’s melodic, bass-heavy synthesizer funk. It is a funk that draws from the same wells of inspiration as “Tap Water” - uptempo 80’s boogie and sizzling, slow 90’s g-funk, united and distilled into Middleton’s signature future-retro bounce. “Back 2 Tha Slapp!” feels all-too-ready for a verse from Snoop circa “The Last Meal,” while “Tap Water,” the title cut that didn’t make it to its namesake album, sounds like it’s been culled directly from the vaults of George Clinton and Bernie Worrell. “This Funk Ain’t No Phase” gives a strong head nod to the gutter Ohio funk of Roger Troutman. Yet, for all of its apparent reverence to its own influences, “Tap Water Runoff” is yet another reminder that modern funk is just that - cutting edge and always ready to bellow a definitive “yes” to the age old question - “Is this the future?”
The unique multidirectional artist Jimi Tenor visited Philophon’s Joy Sound Studios for the first time and created another example that showcases him as one of the spearheading creative minds of our time. On “Order of Nothingness” he takes the listener by his hand to follow him into a multidimensional experience of psychedelic afrobeat. On top of the driving groove of the B-side, “Tropical Eel”, Jimi lets his fingers dance on the Hammond Extra-Voice, that rare tube based proto-synth which was introduced in the same year when Yuri Gagarin was the first human in outer space: Jimi - proto-synth - outer space. That’s a very logical order!

Jamall fka Buff1 gets down on a spacey Boom Bap track that Rhett lays down along with traditional scratch chorus hooks, on some dynamic duo DJ/MC steeze.
Includes 12 page booklet and download card. Ann Arbor's resident shape-shifting soul man, Grammy nominated MAYER HAWTHORNE, releases his fourth studio LP, 'Man About Town,' via BMG's Rights imprint on April 8th. The album follows in the wake of the 37-year-old Michigan musician's '80s funk project with collaborator, Jake One, called 'Tuxedo,' which was released last year. 'Man About Town' contains ten new tracks with Hawthorne playing all the instruments. It features the catchy current single, 'Cosmic Love' - released as an album taster earlier this year - which is a soulful retro-groove with shimmering keys and churning rhythm guitar whose falsetto vocals recalls Curtis Mayfield. Other standouts include 'Love Like That' - scheduled as the next single and released on the same day as the album - plus the infectious beat ballad 'Breakfast In Bed,' the sleek and sensuous horn-laced groove 'Lingerie & Candlewax' which boasts an insistent earworm of a chorus and the laidback reggae-infused 'Fancy Clothes.'

Originally released in November of '92, "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde" emerged at a time when gangsta rap dominated what people were hearing, seeing and buying, especially on the west coast. The Pharcyde's refreshing sound – lively, humorous and inventive lyrics over lush jazzy productions – changed hip hop's trajectory and influenced generations of artists. Now, one of the landmark singles from "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde" is available in a limited 7" colored vinyl pressing housed in ultra-deluxe full color sleeve.
M83 presents the epic new Mute Records full-length album Junk. Following Grammy nominated album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, featuring platinum single, "Midnight City," and two triumphant years of world touring, Anthony Gonzalez – who serves as M83's musical architect, songwriter, front man and primary vocalist – returns with an artistic evolution, explaining, "I want to show different sides of me on this album. I want to come back with something more intimate, yet somehow with...less me!" Feeling a renewed kinship with Gonzalez's early musical inspirations like Tangerine Dream, Aphex Twin, and genre-expanding visionaries like Brian Wilson and Kevin Shields, M83 both returns to his roots with this album, yet makes a logical leap forward. And while M83 albums have always combined genres in a nostalgic and provocative way – from shoegaze and ambient to synth-pop and '90s alt-rock – for Junk, Gonzalez experiments adventurously with sounds and styles he's never previously attempted in his music. "All my albums have layers of eclecticism to them, but with this album I wanted to take that even further," he adds. On the album title Junk Gonzalez divulges, "Anything we create today is going to end up being space junk at one point anyway, and I find it really fascinating and scary at the same time – beautiful too in a way. I have this image of pieces of humanity floating in space, lost forever. It also means that nowadays everything goes so fast and everybody is kind of throwing away art in a certain manner. People will listen to an album for instance and just pick a track they like to put on a playlist. They're not going to take the time to listen to an album anymore because they have to jump on the next thing."

Mark James (AKA The 45 King) is a world-renowned DJ/ Producer pioneer in Hip Hop. His breakbeat classic “The 900 Number” has been a staple among DJs since its release in 1987 (notably featured as the song to “The Ed Lover Dance” on MTV’s Yo MTV Raps). Throughout the last 30 years, 45 King has managed to stay relevant, producing hits for some of Hip Hop’s biggest names including Jay-Z & Eminem, with production for their hit songs “It’s A Hard Knock Life” & “Stan”, respectively. With a prolific output and catalog of beats, he has set out to release a series of limited edition 45s with brand new and never before heard music. “Red Alert” is fifth in a series of unique, “mini 45 RPM albums” featuring 45 King’s signature sound; breaks chopped and looped to perfection. This 7” features a special verse from a certain superstar rapper's long lost St. Ides commercial from '97 among other funky beats and breaks.
It all started at a Detroit strip club called Platinum, with a platter of deep-fried beef taquitos and a dancer whose face looked a bit like Burt Reynolds. It was here that Sam Baker first met a self-described fan of his, who gave him the sage advice to take his music work more seriously. Sam had long since graduated from tapping on piano, clarinet and video games to working on the MPC and 404 under the name Samiyam, circulating beat tapes among local crew in Michigan, and zip files to friends on the web. He was among a network of post-Donuts hip-hop producers focusing on instrumentals as the work, rather than traditional MC/producer collaborations, who found themselves migrating west and huddling in the scene around the Low End Theory in east Los Angeles. That's where Flying Lotus met Sam and picked him for the debut release on his Brainfeeder label, 2008's Rap Beats Vol. 1. Sam Baker's Album followed in 2011. His Wish You Were Here showed up on Leaving Records in 2013, along with production work for Earl Sweatshirt, Captain Murphy and Pharoahe Monch along the way. Samiyam has been extended Stones Throw family for a while now, and debuts on the label with Animals Have Feelings, an album which he considers the creative sequel to Rap Beats Vol. 1. As he tells it, "Animals has roots in beats made around the time of Vol. 1, and the new stuff on the record has some of the same sound." The record is classic instrumental hip-hop, mixed with a handful of rap tracks he did with the few MC collaborators he chooses to work with: Earl Sweatshirt ("Mirror"), Action Bronson ("Mr. Wonderful"), Jeremiah Jae and Oliver the 2nd ("Lord of the Rings").
Limited edition double LP on 140 gram White Vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve. Gore is the upcoming eighth studio album by the American alternative metal band Deftones, set to be released on April 8, 2016.
Love Streams takes its cues from the avant-classical orchestration and extreme electronic processing of Tim Hecker's previous full-length, 2013’s Virgins, but shaped into more melancholic, ultraviolet hues. Inspired by notions of 15th century choral scores (particularly those by Josquin des Prez), transposed to an artificial intelligence-era language of digital resonance and bright synths, the album was assembled gradually, with layers of studio-tracked keyboards, choir and woodwinds being woven into the mix, then molded and disfigured through complex programming. Like hearing some ancient strain of sacred music corrupted by encryption, Hecker admits to thinking about ideas like “liturgical aesthestics after Yeezus” and the “transcendental voice in the age of auto-tune,” during its creation. The Love Streams sessions took place throughout 2014 and 2015 at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavik, Iceland – where parts of both Virgins and Ravedeath, 1972 were tracked – with Hecker reuniting with the same crew of collaborators from Virgins (Kara-Lis Coverdale, Grímur Helgason) and bolstered by the Icelandic Choir Ensemble, whose vocal arrangements were scored by Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson. The title of Hecker’s new work can be interpreted any number of ways – erotic, technological, spiritual – although his own conception is appropriately vast, calling it “a riff on the ubiquity and nihilism of streaming of all forms of life.” Now we stream more than we love. Nowadays music too frequently resembles a product, or white noise. With a career spanning fifteen years, Tim Hecker belongs to a select camp actively resisting this undertow, this reduction in significance.
How High is a soundtrack album for the film How High, starring hip-hop stars Method Man & Redman.
As the buzz of many of hip hop's young leaders-to-be evolves from loud commotion into hushed whispers, Black Milk has stayed relevant by remaining focused on creating music that endures. He's achieved recognition from fans, critics, and his peers as one of the best producers around, and when coupling that talent with his sharp lyricism and stylish delivery as an emcee, Black has proven to be one of the most vital hip hop artists of his generation. This is already clear to those who heard his 2008 album Tronic, which capped a successful and astonishingly prolific year (in which he also released collaborative full-length releases with rappers Bishop Lamont and Fat Ray, as well as producing the acclaimed solo album from Slum Village's Elzhi). Tronic showcased a growth in production technique that few expected from a beatmaker best-known for chopping samples, as his signature drums were now peppered with live instrumentation and richer arrangements. After a difficult 2009 that saw the untimely death of Baatin of Slum Village--who Black credits with jumpstarting his professional career--and the sudden illness and paralysis of his manager HexMurda, Black Milk announced that his new release would be audaciously titled Album of the Year. Black quickly explained that the title was referring to the course of events from the previous 12 months. Many fans and critics discounted that explanation, expressing either excitement or objection that he was brashly proclaiming that his work would be the year's best before the year had even started. Far from a melancholic work, Album of the Year once again sees Black Milk working to break new ground in hip hop production, and to both refine and redefine his sound. While continuing to construct the skeletons of the tracks on his same trusted AKAI MPC-2000 XL that he's been using for years, he now employs a team of studio musicians and session players to add new layers of fat and muscle to his songs, with most of the players' parts composed by the artist himself.. A broad range of influence shines through in the tracks, with tinges of rock, reggae, and afrobeat joining his trademark hip hop bangers. Other than the heavy contributions from both members of his live band (vocalist/keyboardist AB and drummer Daru Jones), the album exclusively features players and vocalists from his hometown of Detroit, including vocalist Melanie Rutherford, bassist Tim Shellaberger, and the versatile horn player and string arranger Sam Beaubien (who arranged horns and strings on Mayer Hawthorne's A Strange Arrangement). The few guest raps are provided by Royce Da 5'9" (Slaughterhouse), Elzhi, and newcomer Danny Brown.

Joseph Abajian (DJ Jab) founded Fat Beats in 1994 with nothing more than a shoestring budget and an earnest obsession with the music, the culture, and the brotherhood of New York’s burgeoning rap scene. What began as a simple vinyl shop in Manhattan’s Lower East Side quickly became an integral hub for artists, both aspiring and established, to convene and collaborate on new projects. Joseph’s timing couldn’t have been more impeccable. When the 90’s cultural zeitgeist – and, in turn, the music industry establishment – chose hip-hop as its new arbiter of cool.
International tourists and touring artists alike flocked to Fat Beats for rare vinyl, kindred spirits, and exclusive in-store performances from Jay Z, Eminem, Gang Starr, Outkast, Slum Village, Mos Def, and more. One thing was clear: the Fat Beats phenomenon could no longer be contained in a single basement shop.
In the late nineties, Abajian proceeded to open new stores in Amsterdam, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. He further expanded the company’s profile to include global distribution and record label branches. Distribution has since proven to be the company’s strongest and most enduring enterprise. Today Fat Beats Distribution stands poised as one of the country’s pre-eminent distributors of vinyl & specialty item records: a proud survivor in an industry now famous for its mortality rate. Despite market fluctuations, technology innovations, and stylistic revolutions, Fat Beats has remained steadfast in its commitment to the timeless vinyl format and to the loyal community who keeps it spinning.
