Damu The Fudgemunk - Overthrone (Try A Little Skillfulness)/ All Green (45)
$10.99
Damu The Fudgemunk is back with another 7” on his Redefinition Records label.
This time we’re greeted with a minimalist designed black jacket with a simple “O” and “G” on opposing sides of the record. The O stands for “Overthrone (Try a lil skillfulness)”, a masterfully produced instrumental which features one of Damu’s signature arrangements, combining pianos, horn blasts, a seemingly infinite number of patterns as well as some choice cuts and scratches ... “Pass the crown, let’s get down to business” ... Notably this piece features the same Otis sample as heard on a certain Throne LP that you may have heard of. Is Damu trying to say something with this track? His cuts, “Empires Are Over Thrown” may suggest that is so, but as he usually does, Damu let’s his music do the talking so listeners will have to draw their own conclusions.
The B-Side features “All Green” which many may recognize as the instrumental version of Damu’s Army Fatigue Rap Remix (Kaimbr & Kev Brown, 2011). Damu finally decided to liberate this monsterous beat which will surely satisfy his core audience and then some. “All Green” is an achievement in limitations. Taking what many considered to be an overused well of sample fodder and turning it into something completely new and original, while still making it feel familiar is something Damu is becoming known for. Packaged in a black paper sleeve inside a mylar dust jacket with an outer sticker, this is a yet another quality Damu product that shouldn’t be missed.
