yom kippur

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Day of Atonement"

Yom Kippur, also known in English as the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn and important of the
Jewish holidays. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jews traditionally observe this holy day with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services.
Yom Kippur is the tenth and final day of the
Ten Days of Repentance which begin with Rosh Hashanah. According to Jewish tradition, God inscribes each person's fate for the coming year into a "book" on Rosh Hashanah and waits until Yom Kippur to "seal" the verdict. During the Ten Days of Repentance, a Jew tries to amend his behavior and seek forgiveness for wrongs done against God and against his fellow man. The evening and day of Yom Kippur are set aside for public and private petitions and confessions of guilt. At the end of Yom Kippur, one considers himself absolved by God.
In the days before Jesus, once a year, the Jewish nation would go to the temple in Jerusalem with a sacrifice to atone for their sins. Once Jesus came and became the sacrifice for all mankind, the Day of Atonement changed and now we can ask for forgiveness for are sins a second after we commit them. "For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should nor perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) Jesus was the only perfect, sinless man and was condemned for us because He did nothing wrong to deserve to be crucified. It was the sins of all mankind that put Jesus on the cross and now we can ask for forgiveness through our Savior Jesus and live a Godly life according to the Bible. This is what God wants us to do if we are hearing His Word. Revelation 3:20 says: Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
