P.U.R.E. - Penta (Digital)

Fast rising VA spitter P.U.R.E. showcases his unabashed lyricism over the appropriately titled five track EP, Penta. The title, which signifies the number five in Greek, plays a strong meaning to the artist as it correlates to Power Refinement—one of the ten pillars of Supreme Mathematics—which serves as the backbone to the Five-Percent Nation of which P.U.R.E. is a believer.

Throughout the project, the gifted lyricist flexes his masterful pen game over a bevy of  top tier production largely supplied by the likes of Baltimore’s own Jamil Honesty, with additional tracks by Willie Downey and Chat Production 803. On the menacing opener, “The Kooker,” P.U.R.E. grabs your attention as he spits with reckless abandon over Jamil’s heart pounding production: “No days off, I gotta get to it pronto / master of my craft, I could do this sh*t in blindfolds / focus on my business, don’t feed in week convos / Humble didn’t work, so I had to show ‘em congo.”

On “Y.I.T.”—short for “y'all in trouble”—P.U.R.E. places other emcees on notice as he glides over the Willie Downey produced track. Sonically, the song pays homage to the late Marvin Gaye, all without sampling, as he further highlights his talents by adding his own melodies to the soothing groove.

All in all, Penta shows and proves that quality reigns supreme over quantity—after just five tracks it’s fair to say that P.U.R.E. makes believers out of all of us.
