Since 2007, the Lawrence, KS-based outfit known as SUNU has been consistently delivering what has been described as “A wall of drums, horns, and funk”. Employing West-African percussion such as djembe and dunun combined with a trio of powerhouse horns and a driving rhythm section allows them to mix elements of Afrobeat, funk, jazz, and R&B. This potent stew of pure soul keeps them regarded as one of the most in-demand acts in the Lawrence and Kansas City areas. With their first release on Sunflower Soul Records, SUNU makes several statements: with rhythm, with harmony, with their voices. In the tradition of Fela Kuti, they show that they are not afraid to speak out against the atrocities that face the modern world. With “Food, Inc.” and “Liberation”, SUNU aims to inspire movement in society as well as movement of booties on the dance floor!
Conceived out of a mutual love for the Tascam 238 multitrack cassette machine, members of the Bay Area’s M-Tet and Kansas City’s Boogaloo 7 come together to form The 238s on this hardhitting debut 45. The A-Side, “The Itch”, is a dance floor burner featuring vocalist Julia Haile, sure to give listeners a case of itchy feet. The B-Side, “The Scratch”, is the sweet relief featuring fat and sampler-ready drum breaks, as well as funky horn stabs and a McGriff-esque Hammond organ solo.
