When Greg Caz and Deano Sounds teamed up to create The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul they created a collection of vintage Brazilian music that stretches across the scope of funk, soul, and psychedelic. With three lead vocalists, Kate, Nya, and Piya and a band that pulls influence from every corner of a record store, it’s no wonder they are already taking the scene by storm. They are an act that gets put on as an opener and shortly there after is asked by the venue to do a month long residency. That residency leads them to a full page write up in The New Yorker before they even have a single out. The long and short of it is that 79.5 wins over the listeners wherever they play with an infectious energy. Between the arrangements of bandleader Kate Mattison and the prowess of all the players, their sets run a gamut of energies and tempos, whether breaking it down to a capella, turning it up to disco, or mastering the middle, they run the groove, and the crowd follows suit. Take all of that and put it in the studio with Big Crown’s own Leon Michels on production duties and you get a record we can’t wait to put out in the world, a record on which every song was recorded live to tape in one take. “Terrorize My Heart”, a tune leaving no room for gray, finds the ladies of 79.5 walking the line between vulnerability and forthrightness. In 2006 I had been DJing for over 10 years and my brother Dave was a seasoned musician, but I was still a novice in the studio. Making a full original song can be daunting, so here I was able to hand-pick my favorite vocals, steal a few kickdrums and chop up some cool synths. My remixes also allowed me to get my music heard. I didn’t have to finish a full project. They gave me an à la carte formula, landing on various labels. The great thing about remixes is they create an ecosystem.It’s almost like a shared economy. The debut 7” release from Hobo Camp and 2nd release as a label comes from Adam Chini from San Diego, California. Adam is the lead keyboard player in Brian Ellis’ Reflection, and this release is a solo journey into a world of synth-ed out modern funk with a tinge of psychedelic bliss. Made using all analog equipment and vintage drum machines, Chini channels the vibe of lo-fi boogie funk rarities and creates a private press style release that could have been released at any point in time (is this from 1982, 1994 or 2016?)
Adult Jazz first appeared back in 2013, amid a flurry of praise surrounding their joyous and addictive debut single 'Springful'. Their unanimously acclaimed debut album Gist Is followed in 2014, self-released on their label Spare Thought, with The Sunday Times calling it "utterly riveting" and the NME and The Line Of Best Fit both naming it their album of the week. Gist Is was a startling and mesmerising voyage from start to finish, taking a labyrinthian, fragmented pop-not-pop path, incorporating songs within songs, while maintaining a sense of humour through some of its complex themes surrounding religion, gender and humanity. Following the release of Gist Is, the band went on to play sell out tours around Europe as well as festivals including Latitude, End of The Road, CMJ and Iceland Airways. The latter was attended by none other than Bjork, who was moved to write about Adult Jazz as ones to watch for Art In America Magazine. David Byrne followed suit and asked them to play at last year's Meltdown festival with Young Marble Giants, while further endorsements came from diverse remixes by Oliver Coates, Happa and a very rare re-work from Shabazz Palaces. Adult Jazz return with a new record 'Earrings Off!' released on May 6 2016 via TriAngle. Comprised of seven tracks, it experiments with sound and song structure as well as its themes and narrative. Long Beach serial chiller Ahwlee is a beat vet who delivers smooth buttery samples with a nostalgic vibe. 1991 is a cult classic cassette now reissued for the first time. These tracks are dusty, mellow and easy-going. Don’t mistake mellow for boring, however, because Ahwlee’s production is nuanced and intricate underneath the minimalist overtones. There’s jazzed-up Rhodes all over the place, and the percussion work masterfully includes a ton of negative space in between perfectly chopped breaks. They’ll get your head nodding.
Airbird & Napolian is comprised of producers Joel Ford (Ford & Lopatin, Ejecta) and Ian Evans who have combined forces for a record on Cascine. The producers met while working on Napolian's Rejoice EP (Software) and an easy chemistry took shape. The debut Airbird & Napolian LP is inspired by west coast dreams and east coast nightmares. Joseph Abajian (DJ Jab) founded Fat Beats in 1994 with nothing more than a shoestring budget and an earnest obsession with the music, the culture, and the brotherhood of New York’s burgeoning rap scene.
